Luma and Buttons

Luma loved dogs and wanted one to tell her secrets. She imagined a dog that could wave a flag with its tail whenever it felt happy. Her neighbor, Mr. Rivera, had a slow-wagging dog named Buttons who watched Luma closely from the porch. Luma learned that dogs wag their tails to show feelings and that a fast wag means big joy while a slow wag can mean curiosity or caution. Luma wished she could make Buttons smile like a blur of wagging fur, so she baked tiny cheese biscuits for him with help from her mom. Buttons sniffed the biscuits and wagged his tail slowly at first. Luma sat very still and made a happy face, and Buttons wiggled faster until his tail looked like a little flag in the wind. Luma realized she could share kind things to make someone feel happy, and that tails are a special way dogs talk. She waved goodnight and felt proud that kindness could be a secret signal between friends.
